About Us
Founded in 1983 under the guidance of Roger Hammond in Staunton, VA, Hammond Insurance Services has been operating as one of the top insurance providers in Virginia. Over the last 35+ years, we have expanded to offer services from four Virginia offices serving clients in over ten states while maintaining the traditional family values we were once founded upon.
As a family-owned, independent agency established by two hardworking friends and their families, Hammond Insurance Services shared a vision to become a dependable, local business that the local community can count on. And to this day, we still aim to be the local establishment that you can trust to protect your most treasured assets.
Our History
Hammond Insurance Services dates back to April 1983. Dain T. Hammond’s father Roger Hammond and a buddy of his, Eugene “Chip” Foster (1950-2003) decided to venture out on their own as partners to start an independent insurance agency, Hammond & Foster.
Building up the business.
Dain’s grandfather gave them a small loan, and with their living room promptly converted from the TV room to the office. The TV, couch, and recliner were replaced with folding tables, filing cabinets, and phone lines strewn across the floor. Growing up in an apple orchard, Dain and his three brothers worked the orchard for sustenance while their dad and Chip built the business.
The early years were tough.
When they could afford a real office, Roger moved a cot in with them. Dain remembers answering the house phone at odd hours for folks who had just gotten into an accident or whose house was on fire. A really special treat would be when he got to ride out in the middle of the night with his dad Roger.
The comforter.
They would go to meet a family while their house still smoldering or meet families who were standing in three feet of water. As unfortunate as the losses were, Dain was proud to be there watching his father play the role of the insurance guy. The person who rushed in to make everything all right, or at the very least, help to start rebuilding. He considered his father the comforter that would tell a business owner or a family that it’s going to be okay—”we got this.”
